COMPOSERS: An overview of extended techniques on the cello. The lecture will include demonstrations of each technique, examples taken from scores for different notation choices, information on the physical limitations that should be considered with each technique, and a discussion around how to work with specific performers to find the right sounds versus creating a score accessible to more performers.
Composers will be encouraged to ask questions throughout.
PERFORMERS: Similar in content to the composition lecture/workshop, but broadened to include all string students.
Students will be asked to bring instruments, and we will workshop and practice each technique as we move through the lecture.
A discussion on how to work with composers in a way that encourages mutual respect will also be included.
Questions will be encouraged throughout.
In these workshops I would work with students on pieces they have composed, or are currently working on, for solo cello. These can occur one-on-one with students, or in a masterclass setting.
A traditional masterclass format with contemporary music, encouraging questions and discussion about the performance of music within its context.
A lecture and guide for preparing any score or parts so that you enter your first rehearsal with confidence.
Drawing on my own experience with learning and performing music quickly as a freelancer, as well as the experiences of my colleagues, I will discuss expectations in first rehearsals and show examples of different types of score/part
A lecture and guide for preparing any score or parts so that you enter your first rehearsal with confidence.
Drawing on my own experience with learning and performing music quickly as a freelancer, as well as the experiences of my colleagues, I will discuss expectations in first rehearsals and show examples of different types of score/part preparation: from writing in cues, to notating a piece's structure, to knowing yourself and the reminders you will need!
We will also discuss the mindset you want when entering a rehearsal with strangers, and the etiquette of gig-work.
A realistic discussion of what the first few years out of music school look like. How to build a freelance career, maintain relationships, find teaching work, create your own projects, and continue to grow. Questions would be encouraged throughout and ideally lead to an honest discussion that would address the student’s concerns.

From the outside looking in it can seem daunting, but this presentation demystifies the process of running an ensemble.

The program surrounds the concept of the labyrinth, of getting lost within a contained space. Each piece explores the endless sonic possibilities of this single instrument, especially the sounds that exist between silence and full resonance.
A performance devoted to the works of the students and their professors. Workshops with each composer would occur before the performance, either one-on-one or in masterclass settings.
